In the September 2026 issue, we have news about the Society, the community, and our upcoming Annual Meeting, along with remembrances of several longtime friends of MSHS.

On Sunday, September 20th, MSHS will hold its 57th Annual Meeting and Museum Open House. The museum opens at 1 pm, with the Annual Meeting beginning at 2 pm. Our guest speaker, Ennis Duling of the Poultney Historical Society, will present Mount Independence: Strong Ground and the Frontier Militia. Duling previews his talk on Page 1, exploring the important role Mount Independence played during the American Revolution—and the connection between the Lake Champlain forts and militiamen from the Vermont frontier, including the settlement that became Middletown Springs.

Inside the September issue, you’ll also find news of a renewed alliance between MSHS and Middletown Springs Elementary School. More than 40 students from Kindergarten through sixth grade will visit the museum in September to explore Cabinets of Curiosities, this year’s exhibit of unusual and easily overlooked objects from the MSHS collection. Also on Page 2 are recent museum acquisitions and donations, and news that the Middletown Springs Gold-Headed Cane has been passed to Don Hemenway, 93, as the town’s oldest resident.

This issue also marks the passing of several people with close ties to MSHS and the surrounding community. We remember Theron “Bud” Krouse, a founding member and Trustee of the Society from its beginning in 1969; Mary and Joe King, longtime Middletown Springs residents and community volunteers; Richard E. Hanson, Jr., a former MSHS Trustee and longtime member; and John William Malcolm, Pawlet farmer, community leader, and longtime MSHS member. Their stories begin on Page 3.

And, finally, on Page 6 you’ll find full details about the September 20th Annual Meeting, including proposed changes to the MSHS bylaws, as well as museum hours, coming events, exhibits, and membership information.
